Glucose is the sugar your body uses as its primary source of energy. This test measures your fasting blood glucose level - taken after you haven't eaten - which tells us how well your body is regulating sugar when it's not actively digesting a meal. Levels that are persistently elevated can indicate insulin resistance or diabetes, while unusually low levels can point to other underlying issues. It's a fundamental marker of metabolic health.

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) gives us something a single glucose reading can't: a window into your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. When glucose circulates in your bloodstream, it attaches to red blood cells - HbA1c measures how much of that has occurred. This makes it one of the most reliable indicators of long-term glucose control, and it's the test most commonly used to diagnose and monitor type 2 diabetes. Unlike fasting glucose, it doesn't require any special preparation and isn't affected by what you ate the day before.
