Biomarker descriptions

ALT

Alanine aminotransferase is an enzyme found mainly in your liver. When liver cells are damaged, ALT is released into the bloodstream, making it one of the first markers to flag potential liver issues.

AST

Aspartate aminotransferase is found in your liver, heart, and muscles. Raised levels can indicate liver inflammation or damage, and the ratio of AST to ALT helps clinicians pinpoint the cause.

GGT

Gamma-glutamyl transferase is an enzyme closely linked to bile duct function. Elevated GGT is often one of the earliest signs of liver stress, particularly from alcohol use or medication.

Albumin

Albumin is the most abundant protein in your blood, produced by the liver. It keeps fluid in your bloodstream and carries nutrients and hormones. Low levels can signal liver or kidney problems.

Bilirubin

Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when red blood cells break down. Your liver processes it for removal. Elevated levels can cause jaundice and may point to liver or gallbladder issues.
